In May of 2023, the Department of Mental Health (DMH) implemented a Knowledge Check and Skills Application test that Officers must pass to be considered CIT Certified.
Certificates are valid for approximately three years at which point Officers are encouraged to enroll in an Advanced De-escalation & Documentation course or a CIT Refresher class to recertify. Officers who completed CIT training prior to May 2023 are also encouraged to enroll in the Advanced and refresher classes in order to become certified.

CIT Recertification is one day training that reviews the foundational principles covered in CIT. Officers build upon their practical knowledge of serious mental illness disorders, suicide prevention, substance misuse, trauma and behavioral health resources. The training also reviews considerations for special populations including adolescents, Veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and the elderly. Reinforcing the application of evidence based crisis intervention de-escalation tactics and communication strategies the training also incorporates hands-on practical exercises.

Advanced De-escalation & Documentation is a scenario based training that utilizes sim-munitions house and classroom didactics to further enhance tactical and verbal de-escalation skills. Introductory Motivational Interviewing skills is also incorporated to provide participants with additional effective communication skills when interacting with individuals with a traumatic history. Documentation and report writing is integrated to address efficient communication and documentation of de-escalation utilized.
