Tactical Negotiations Training is a scenario-based, two-day program designed to bring law enforcement, dispatchers and behavioral health clinicians together to develop a shared approach to communicating with and supporting individuals experiencing a behavioral health or other crisis. The training focuses on practical communication and negotiation strategies, crisis decision-making, de-escalation, behavioral considerations, and the coordination between law enforcement and clinicians during these high risk and complex calls for service. Through realistic, scenario-based exercises, participants have the opportunity to work together, understand each other's roles and responsibilities, and practice strategies that can improve communication, reduce the potential for escalation, and identify appropriate outcomes—including diversion from arrest when appropriate.
The goal of the training is not simply to teach negotiation techniques, but to strengthen the working relationship between law enforcement, dispatchers and behavioral health professionals. By training together, participants can develop a better understanding of how each discipline approaches crisis situations and how they can effectively work as a team before, during, and after a critical encounter.
